Good Habits – Breaking Bad Habits

579286_frustrationHere’s a thought – how about creating good habits that lead to breaking bad habits? Makes sense doesn’t it? Well, here’s a good habit that I have always worked on: patience. The bad habit that this breaks is anger and frustration when dealing with something that isn’t working RIGHT NOW.

Yes, its 11:30 PM at night – kinda late for my CYM post today but there is reason. I couldn’t get online.

Why? Well, I lost power today and it killed my router. I had to reset it and do all these Networking things that I have no idea how to do. But lets back up…

I finally, after two weeks of issues, moved my website: WritingTips4U.com from it’s original hosting: Netfirms, to its new host, BlueHost.com. I won’t get into details about the process but it was a bad one. It was unique to my dilemma and it had to do with an internal “WhoIs” issue.  Whatever… anyway… for two weeks I have been patient. It was a test because I eventually want to move GlennMagasDotCom over to BlueHost. Why? Because if you visit my Blog, it’ll take you forever to load and Netfirms refuses to do anything about it.

Yes – they can. I was informed of why it was slow, but they aren’t going to do anything about it ‘right now’. It has something to do with a move with the data center.

Okay, finally, WritingTips4U.com was moved and then there were permalink issues. Every time you clicked on a link it would not find it. After a call to the best Customer Service around (BlueHost) it was fixed and the guy helping me said, I’m forwarding your site to my email right now. He said he was a writer and is on his second book to a series of SciFi novels. Cool!

I was on the phone with him, I was patient and I didn’t act all irritated despite the irritation!

Ok – then, after dinner, wireless network issue. I spent almost 3 hours reconfiguring this that and the other thing. Everything was ’supposed’ to work, but it didn’t. I was getting really irritated and called Linksys to save the day.

This was a true test because in the middle of my call – I got disconnected. There wasn’t a number exchanged so they wouldn’t be calling me back so I called back.

They tried to look at my account but couldn’t find it – apparently the first customer services rep didn’t log it since we got disconnected. Thanks alot [sarcasm here]!

I had to start all over and explain my wireless network issues. They took over my machine remotely and solved the problem. That was cool – and I got to watch all the mouse moves and know what they did to get things to work the way it was supposed to work.

They sat on the phone with me as I setup my wife’s computer, which was easier than what they did, and I hung up with them to get my kid’s computer logged on.

Where… 3 hours later I’m kicking back with a beer and writing my CYM post.

There’s that other ‘good habit’ I’ve created – my Monday/Wednesday/Friday CYM post. Which, I might cut down to a two-day a week process due to all the other commitments I have to write for.

Anyway, the good habit was this: I didn’t act all upset, I didn’t sigh loudly so people knew I was upset, I didn’t complain to any customer service rep about my frustration – I just explained it and they helped me fix it.

I’m new fan of customer service and ‘help’. Why forge alone and figure things out yourself when someone can help you succeed in what you want accomplished!

Whoa… get that? See how this all works? If you listen to our “Success and Opportunity Readiness Track Podcast” you’ll see a key to success is… Asking for help!

There you have it – good habits: patience, and asking for help. Breaking bad habits: wanting to do things on  your own and letting the frustration get to you!

Next time you feel frustrated, reach deep and react differently. The good habits you’ll create can avoid a ton of anger and frustration. The bottom line – everything will work out anyway, just ask for help!
