Glenn, I think your first point is the best. If we are going to start something new we have to give up something old. So many times people want the best of the old and the new and they end up with just the old. My new years resolution was to give blood every time I was due. I have kept this so far. Great Post.

[...] I was at dinner last night with some friends and a group of us ended up talking about self development books and one book in particular that changed my life! We were discussing good habits and why New Year’s Resolutions fail most of the time. (I discuss breaking bad habits here “Breaking Bad Habits”.) [...]

Thanks Fawn - I just read your article - Great stuff! It is always better to look at the positive side of things.

I try to teach my son - if you think you are going to lose - you probably are. He always gets negative before a game, probably to prepare himself for failure. Any advice on that?

I totally agree; we need to focus on the positive when making changes. Actually, I wrote a post about in January titled "Resolutions Buckle Under the Weight of Goals." You can read it at http://www.fawnmcmanigal.com/?m=20100119. Thinking about the negative just makes us focus on it, a practice that highlights and, in turn, emphasizes the very behavior we wish to quit. Ironic.
