Sportsmanship Wins every time
First, thank you for visiting our blog!
I was so inspired this winter Olympics. All the athletes and their personal success stories were to me, the biggest part of the Olympics! From Nodar Kumaritashvili death on Opening Day, to the Canadian’s incredibly tough road to the gold medal game and eventually winning it in overtime. There are so many obvious and yes, hidden stories of personal success for each and every athlete participating in the olympic games.
If you read Orlando’s “Self Improvement and Motivation – Inspired by Challenges” he revealed the touching story of Joanne Rochette and here mother’s death days before she skated for the Bronze Medal in the Olympics! I, like Orlando, cheer USA all the way, but I could not help but cheer and root for Joanne Rochette’s personal success and her commitment to her goals. This is perseverence at its very best!
Other stories of personal success are all over the place from these past Winter Olympic Games. The USA Bobsled team led by Steven Holcomb, a man who was ‘this close’ to growing blind, won the Gold medal after 60+ years of gold medal drought!
JR Celski, who skated for the US in short track won two medals after recovering from a gruesome injury where he cut his thigh with his own skate in a race – he was never supposed to race at this level of competition again!
And how about those Canadians who lost against the USA in hockey during the preliminaries and had am incrediblly long road to just get into the gold medal game. They had the whole weight of their country, the host country, on them! And they persevered – even in overtime, to win gold.
But don’t seel the American’s short. They battled, and did not give up, waiting till the last 24 seconds in regulation to tie the game and send it into overtime. They could have sat back and let the Canadians win. They could have given up like so many fans already did. But they did not. And just like the Canadians, had their backs against the wall and sent the game into overtime. The Canadians, my hats off to them, had their backs against the wall for seven days – and still, managed, ever so desperately, to win gold.
We can learn from these atheletes. This past 17 days of Olympics was a true lesson on how to improve your life. These athletes had personal obstacles, yet were at the top of the mountain proving to only themselves that they can be the best in the world. They were at the starting line proving that they ’still’ can skate despite a career ending injury. And they were alone, center stage, skating with the weight of their mother’s death still fresh in their minds and still persevered to win a medal!
WOW!
I mean – WOW!
So, why is it that we give up so fast on something like attaining a simple goal that can change our lives and improve our life when these atheletes do not give up – and all they get is a little piece of medal? You think fame and fortune drive these athletes? What fame and fortune will come for Steven Holcomb? Or from the gold medals given for curling or the Nordic comibined – do you even know what that is?
This is what is attained: They set a goal. They worked hard. They had obstacles. Injuries, deaths, financial, critisism, a TON of failures. They did not give up on their goals. Then – they went out and achieved them!
Same goes for life. Make life a sport. Learn from it. Why? Because you will always win – sportsmanship will always win – despite the failures! Improve your life – Don’t give up! As I shared in that post.

- What can we learn from these athletes?
- What can we do to get closer to being the best we can be?
